Subject: Buntin's/Bunton's (Bunting's) Mill
Where exactly was Buntin's Mill?
I believe the evidence points to just south of the larger of the 2 mill ponds that show on the map of Selbyville, Baltimore Hd. of Beers Atlas 1868. This would be to the left on the present road to Bethany Beach just before Phillip Showell School. Please add any documentation you have in support of this.
I will be adding my documentation soon. The other Selbyville Yahoo! site, which discourages members' input, tries to prove it was on the road to Fenwick, near the present Buntings Mill Pond Development. Please add any evidence you have to refute this.

Where did the date 1788 come from which the town of Selbyville uses as the founding date?
This date is on their sign north of town on Rt 113 and is on the seal that shows on the town web page. I have seen it quoted but have not found its source or a document with 1788 that would verify it. Please post any documentation that you think may be the reason for this date being used.

I've posted a copy of the 1868 Beers map of Baltimore Hundred. It's in the Files/Maps folder of the Group Website. You should be able to download it or view it in your browser. When viewing it in Adobe Reader, you can set the scale (zoom), and also pan left, right, up or down. (Works for me - I hope it works for you) Merlot

I found 'Hudson Cemetery #594, aka Hickory Hill' & it is quite overgrown. (With every species of briar local to the area I would guess.) It is altogether hidden from the road by the land owner's shop which abuts to it only a few feet away. When I get a chance, I'll go back & chat with the land owner to see what his interest level and concerns might be.(See photos.)

I think this one is called Hickory Tree not Hickory Hill.
I believe Hickory Hill is a small community west of Millsboro.

Anybody know if the Selbyville McCabe Clan is having a reunion this year? If I recall correctly, they have always been on the third sunday in August at the Salem Church. They used to send announcements to their mailing list, but I haven't received one in years.

I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself and say hello to the group. My name is Audra Hart, I currently live in Millsboro, Delaware with my husband and two children. I've come to the group by invitation from Marjorie Adams whom I met through the Find A Grave website.

You may have noticed I jumped right in and uploaded just over 100 photos from the Joe Long Cemetery in Selbyville, my latest project. I believe I have photographed the entire site although I did not get all of the footstones as the ground is currently pretty treacherous with cactus, thorny vines, branches and overgrowth of weeds.

If you find that I've made any errors, please feel free to let me know. I hope to contribute a lot to the group and make friends. I also take special requests, so don't hesitate to ask if there is something I can do for you.

Looking forward to "meeting" all of you.

Hello - Nice to meet you.  I need to introduce myself too.  I'm Bill Long, age 68, I live in Crofton, MD (near Annapolis) and have deep roots in Sussex Co.  My father was born in Lewes, DE.  His father was born somewhere around Dagsboro or Bishopville....not sure exactly where.  My Long Line is descended from the same Joe Long that is presumably buried in the Joe Long Cemetery.

Audra,
You did a fantastic job on the photos of the Joe Long Cemetery!
My heart is full. This burial ground belonged to my Long and Murray ancestors; Joe Long was my 3 gr grandfather. My mother Christine (Baker) Adams began finding our ancestors here when this was so overgrown she had to use clippers. I did the transcription as a memorial to her when I was "home" to lay her to rest in Oct. 2005 at Red Men's.
I grew up in Selbyville and now live in Whipple OH near Marietta at the Ohio River. My full name is Marjorie Ellen Adams (Green)--I go by my maiden name.
I am very excited to be the moderator of this new Selbyville group. You have helped to get it off to a great start.

I really enjoy going through these burial grounds and trying to link the people together. Finding this group will help me with that, as I said I am not related to anyone here, but still find it fascinating and I enjoy it. Thank you for sharing your information with me, I hope I can do something to help you somewhere along the line.

Hi Jason, glad to meet you. The Joe Long Cemetery has fast become one of my favorties. It's such a peaceful and pretty place. I have seen many Hudsons in the Selbyville area, and have more photos I've yet to go through and also many more to take.

I have a list of place I intend to visit in the near future, the current heat wave is sure slowing me down! You will see me posting lots of pictures, since photography is my first love. This group will certainly keep me busy :) and I look forward to that.

Audra, The Selbyville Red Men's group is taking care of the cemetery. They do not own it as they do the Red Men's Cemetery on Cemetery Rd. We have Freddie Stevens to thank for being able to get to the stones as he is usually the one who does the clean up--when the weather is cooler. I really appreciate your concern about the trash. Perhaps you could call him (302-436-8506) and mention the condition of Isaac McCabe's crypt and the overturned Curtis & Julia Murrays stone. It would be so great if they could get more supports made by Mumford's Sheet Metal. There is the possibility of funds for projects like this from the DE State Cemetery Board but the Red Men's have to register their cemeteries and apply for the funds.

I don't know what his family ever did with all his data, but, I was hoping one of them would take some interest and put some online, but I haven't seen that as yet.
Have a great day
Ida

That is the feeling I get at the Armwell Long cemetery. Every time I have been there the birds are singing, a gentle breeze, peaceful. The sister of my great great grandfather is buried there.

Thanks Marjorie! I'm happy to be here. Although I don't have any ancestors or family in the area I still find it very interesting. I have traced my maternal ancestors back to the early 1600s in Italy, but it is much harder doing the foreign stuff and I think I have gone as far as I can. I have little information on my biologic father so I wasn't able to get anywhere on that side. I sometimes feel like I've been "robbed" in that area because I am so interested in family history and genealogy.

Since moving to Delaware I have been somewhat of a drifter just documenting cemeteries and learning whatever I can about the people I come across. It isn't always easy of course, but it keeps me busy and I feel like I am accomplishing something along the way.

I really like the Joe Long Cemetery, it has a certain feel to it that is just so peaceful and pretty. I will definitely be going back to find the last few I managed to miss. I also spoke with my husband about bringing a trash bag and picking up some of the debris around. I get so upset when I find beer bottles and trash scattered about these "rural" cemeteries.

While we were there yesterday we noticed another large branch had fallen off the tree just over Margaret Cady and Isaac McCabe, the tree has so many "dead" branches hanging over them I'm afraid one of them is going to fall and break the stones! That is probably what happened to the slab covering Isaac. Do you know who currently owns the property? I know someone has been there gathering fallen branches and piling them along the woods but don't know who.

Well, I didn't mean to be so "long winded" just wanted to thank you for the warm welcome.

I just noticed that the well overgrown cemetery "Hudson Cemetery" that is on Cypress Road in Selbyville is on the property of Thomas Baker. My mother is a personal friend of Tommy Baker, he does alot of work for her, she's a realtor and whenever things need to be fixed on a home she is selling he's her go-to guy.

I am going to attempt to see if I can talk him (either thru her or personally) into maybe donating some time, money and/or resources to have the cemetery cleared out. My hubby and I are willing to what we can, and with some help we can probably gain access and photograph and document the site.

I'm sure I can at the very least get his permission to enter the property and see what we can do. Going to call mom this morning and feel her out on the idea.

Audra, see Jason's photos on our site and my text file under Hudson. From my partial research I think the property is owned by his mother-in law.  I have asked Red Men's to take this project on but my contacts do not have email so I am not sure if they have registered it yet with the state.

I did talk to Tommy when I was there last fall and he said he had offered to clean it up for $500. The DE Cemetery Board wants 2 estimates for clean up before they will considerer funding it.

Go ahead and pursue it from your end.

Does anyone have a transcription of Armwell Long Cemetery? Even just a partial? I made my first trip there today and photographed all of the stones but many of them are illegible. I've looked around a little bit but haven't found any sort of information as of yet.

I have a lot of preparation work to do on the 200+ photos I took today and it would be a BIG help if someone could provide me with any kind transcriptions, lists or hints.

I want to try and put together as complete of a list as possible so that I can submit to the Delaware Tombstone Project also. Anyone want to lend a hand? Please. I would be very greatful.

Audra,
The Colonial Roots bookstore in Lewes has the Hudson and Tatnall CD. The CD was published in 2005 but since the work was done by Hudson and Tatnall in the 1930s, the stones were not as hard to read as they were when the DDGS did its work on the Tombstone Book.
From the introduction:
"The records in this CD were compiled from the State of Delaware, Division of Historical
and Cultural Affairs, microfilm Reel #871 - 872, microfiche film RG9020 and also
limited field research by Robert J. Redden.
The Hudson Cemetery Records were compiled ca. 1928 by Millard F. Hudson. The
Tatnall Tombstone Records were compiled by Walter G. Tatnall, the former Delaware
State Archivist, in the 1930's . The “Tatnall” and “Hudson” records were compared by
names. If a match was not found, the “Tatnall” data were added."

According to family lore, our earliest Hudson ancestors, two Hudson brothers on my grandmother Hudson's side, sailed up the Indian River and settled, one at Sandy Branch and one at Polly's Branch, in the mid-1700's. These were the relatives of my cousins Judy Hudson Adams, Sue and Joe Hudson, and of me, Beth Wolpert. There was also an Elizabeth Hudson who hid from Cromwell's men in the swamps of Delaware. A note mentioning these stories was in the family Bible on a piece of paper. I don't know if Elizabeth was related to the brothers. I understand that Sandy Branch is near Selbyville and Polly's Branch is close by. Descendants of these Hudsons still live in the area, but I live now in south-west Virginia, and would be glad of more information. Beth

Hi Beth, I too am curious as to how & when our line of Henry's descendants migrated from Morumsco of Somerset to the Selbyville, Frankford, Roxanna area. My family also had a 2 brothers story but in our case with them leaving the area. I doubt I'll ever find a definate match for that piece of lore. Also, I believe that Sandy Branch & Polly Branch of Selbyville are tributaries feeding the St. Martin River, although the rivlets of Vines Creek of the Indian River system do reach down into & through Frankford and a little southward toward Selbyville. It would be interesting to know what the waterways looked like in the 1700's. Jason

I understand that Sandy Branch is near Selbyville and Polly's Branch is close by. Descendants of these Hudsons still live in the area, but I live now in south-west Virginia, and would be glad of more information. Beth

Jason, allowing for modern siltation, the nearest water to Selbyville deep enough for a boat on Indian River would have been a couple of miles east of Dagsboro or a couple of miles north of Ocean View, either one about ten miles by road from Selbyville.  Either location is a possibility.  As far as I can determine the oldest route in the area was the one called the Philadelphia Post Rd south from Millsboro to Dagsboro to Frankford and then Selbyville and southward.  The route is now a collection of minor state roads.  The Ocean View route alternative through Roxana seems just as possible considering that Hudsons appear so early in the census in that part of Sussex Co.  Ken Bunting

Jason

Jason, These photos make me feel as if I were actually within the St Martins church. The windows with their tiny panes are so unexpected, and the cobblestone floor, and the beautiful brickwork. It's difficult to believe that this is 1750's workmanship; everything looks so sleek and modern. You caught every detail for those of us who can't be there, and I loved the slide show format! Beth

According to Jane D Bunting who has seen this in the Dover Archives, the name is Jonathan Buntin.

Jason, Beth has not told us the names of the 2 she was referring to but the Hudson family from Henry of Accomack VA didn't exactly "migrate" directly from Somerset to DE--succeeding generations just bought land a little further north until they were in what is now Delaware. Additionally, the area we are talking about, southern Baltimore Hd., was in Worcester MD until 1775/6 and in Somerset MD before 1742. Also as you know, the "tales of origin" passed down in families, while holding a grain of truth, are not often accurate overall.

Thanks Beth and also Ken, Saint Martin's is a true delight to visit. Ken, to your comment, "The rector in 1759 was Edward Dingle and I have a list of the vestrymen and a partial list of members if anyone is interested" I would be very interested in any info you have on the church or parish. The Rev Edward Dingle (one of three interred within the building) you mentioned is my direct ancestor.
Thanks, Jason

Marjorie, I believe that is true. That most of the migration was slow & steady. And of course the old boundaries were much different than they are today. I can only place my Hezekiah in what is now Delaware and I haven't had time to research past him.

Jason, I would be glad to have your info on Edward Dingle; I have a relative Edward Dingle Hudson that they called "Dingle" and I assume he was named for the minister or his son. Also, if you have a copy of your tree that you would be willing to share, that would be great! If willing, please send to my old email address that we have used previously. About Hezekiah, I also found him only in Delaware, and only one man named "Hezekiah Hudson" which is a great help, because it's easy to isolate him. My Isaac Seth(also in Ken Bunting's tree) lived where the Seth Hudson Cemetery is located on Gum Road, which is near Hezekiah's property apparently. Beth

Ida, I see that you have Hastings and Hearn in your tree, and both are in mine also. Did your Hastings family ever spell their name without the "s" as "Hasting"? Mine were originally "Hasting" but gave in to adding the "s" as time went by. Rhoda Hasting, daughter of Clement and Margaret Ann unknown, married my great grandfather,Joseph Sudler Hudson, who was born in 1850. I don't see them in your tree, but if you know Clement's parents, that would be a great help to me. I don't know where the Hearns come in to my tree, but my cousin says they do.

Yes, the Seth, Isaac & Elizabeth Hudson cemetery is on Gum Tree Road on the west side out of Frankford, not too far from route 26.

Elizabeth, my maternal grandmother was a Hastings and she pronounced it
Hasting because of lack of education, but it really does have the "s" on
the end. She was Letha May of Rufus P. of William Handy Hastings. My
2nd Gr-Grandmother on paternal side was a Hearne and that's how she
spelled it, but her father had dropped the "e" for whatever reason and
all his children added it back. She was Elizabeth Hearne of Lowder
Hearn of Ebenezer Hearne of Thomas Hearne, (I) of William, called "The
Merchant" Hearne. I will share anything you need that I have.

Jason, I saw your photograph of John Hudson's tombstone, and it looks quite old, so I wonder whether you know any more about him.
