My great grandfather Milby Bunting (whose photo I posted) taught, but I'm not sure where.  He is always listed as farmer in the census but I don't think that was unusual.  Until about 1876 he lived on his father Merrill's property near the intersection of Lighthouse Rd and Polly Branch Rd.  Beers shows a schoolhouse at this location.  He then moved to St Martins Neck on what is now Salt Grass Point Rd.  There was once a one room school at the intersection of Salt Grass and St Martins Neck Rds.  So he may have taught at either one or both of these schools.  I never thought to ask.  His son my great uncle Elijah granted one acre of land for the one room school house at Bunting Community but I don't know who taught there.  Someone in the family may know.

Let's make a list of those we know about.
In my family they are bit later than Beers map:
-John William Henry Baker (of Jonathan) from abt abt 1870-
-Edward V Baker (of Jonathan) from abt 1893-1900, at Ocean View; drove a horse and buggy fr Selbyville on Monday morning, boarded  there and drove home on Friday.
-Maggie Holloway (of Elisha) before her marriage in 1876 to Seth Baker (of Jonathan).
-Clara Holloway (of Elisha) never married,  abt 1884-
James Murray (can't remember which; not Sr. or Jr.)

Others of you must know of some too.

No I don't. The reference was written on the back by the Archives. I'll put it on my list to write to them about it. I am just now in the last stages of transcribing and formatting an 1854 diary of my 2 gr grandmother Abigail Adams, a jewel from a new found distant cousin in Washington state.

This William Hudson would have been born about 1846. The census shows his wife as Mary H. and has children listed as: Harvey W., Mary, and Arabella. It lists his mother as Mary A.

Great find Mary Lou. Wonder if anyone knows of people in their families who were fatalities.
Joshua B. Murray is the only one in the Joe Long Cemetery who died in 1881.

This is really a good list.  Let me add that in my book I give the following information: "Stephen Ellis had a private school in his home in Centerville in the 1790's and a schoolhouse was built there in 1824, and a district schoolhouse was built in 1835,"  I think my source for this was Dept of Education, State of Delaware, but I'll try to find it in my notes.  Also, the surveyor John Watson and his crew in their diary for 1751 mention a small school near where they located the ten mile boundary marker.

Bill, Sandy Branch flows right through Selbyville,w to e crossing under south Main St.about where Hoosier Ave.is. It then connects with Polly's Branch and the 2 flow into Buntings Branch which flows south connecting to the Bishopville Prong of St. Masrtin's River. If you go to our Links, Maps, Beers and search MD Worcester you can see the MD bodies of water. For the Selbyville portion search Beers Baltimore Hd and you will see the waterway that crosses the DE/MD line at Selbyville--this is Buntings Branch.

Subject: New map of Sandy Branch Community
I have posted in photos a new map of Sandy Branch Community representing the landmarks, names of people, and properties as closely as I have been able to locate them until now. There may be changes to make and I welcome comments and advice. In particular I have had a problem untangling the Murray deeds. I have indicated the acreage of properties wherever known in order to give an idea of the size and extent of each. For most properties it is impossible to guess at the shape unless there is a plat. For example, "Jinneys Addition" was probably not square, but to estimate the location of "Dennis Security" I have assumed it was rectangular and calculated the distance in pole/acres north from near the mill pond, the only landmark mentioned in the deed.

Ken, I am excited and overwhelmed by your work. Thank You, thank you.
The only comment I have at this time is that Hudson's Tavern may have been further south (maybe even in Worcester on the Stage road, also called the King's Highway. If we can place the most northerly of the Hudson properties that were near the line, in Worcester, it may be one of them.)

Thank you, Marjorie.  There were times I almost gave up on putting it together and it still needs work.
Regarding Hudsons Tavern, you are probably right.  I was thinking that the community was certainly in existence by the time of Benjamin Long's will in 1799 and it seemed reasonable to find a place to put travelers.  Maybe wishful thinking.  Ken

It's Albert Burton.  There are several Burtons in the census years, but the 1810 enumerator made his "n" and "r" so nearly alike you have to look really close.  The same census has a Jonathan Burton, too.

Subject: Comments on Map of Sandy Branch Community
There isn't space for this in comments under the map.
First of all, I should establish a time frame for the map: about 1810 or between 1800 and 1820. The part of Polly Branch Rd through Arthur McCabe's property probably didn't exist as more than a nameless lane. I included it as a point of reference and should label it "Currently Pollys Branch RD". The same goes for Cemetery Rd., although I think a public road did exist there. The church should be labeled "Salem Church 1812". Dorothy Pepper locates it at Salem Church Cemetery. This seems reasonable since the property was later granted by Milbourn Murray whose property could not have extended as far north as Cemetery Rd. (Collins Lot began 36 poles or 594' north of the branch, well south of Cemetery Rd).
I have tried to interpret the information in the deeds posted to SHAG. Lacking plats and compass directions, it is impossible to draw the properties, so I haven't tried. Also, spacing precludes labeling them except in a general way. The name James Murray Sr should be removed. James Murray Jr would then be on both sides of the branch with David and Milbourn Murray near the church. Labeling the Murray properties is mostly guess work since the information for "Addition" and "Murrays Addition" is so confused. I placed "Bush" near the State Road on the assumption it was a place to live.
I don't think Matthew McCabe owned any property at all, but somewhere I got the idea that his blacksmith shop was on either Zeno or Isaiah Long.

Ken,  you can add information in 2 ways: 1. in the description of the photo, i.e., the time period of the map.
and 2. as comments under the photo. You can use as many comments as it takes.
Your map is a wonderful help and I am just trying to help you add to it.
In the deed ref for the 1849 church it names the road Unity Grove Road which I think is the same as now Cemetery Rd. Isn't that right between Benjamin Long and Collins Lot as labeled on your map?
Does this help on the Murray properties: 1. Addition was a MD patent in 1760 of James Jr. next to Bush of James Sr., 1755  who had died by the resurveys of 1776 (first in PA and then in DE.) Couldn't you put "orig James Murray Sr.'? The DE resurvey included the old Addition + the old Bush + vacant land. The 1812 Church was not the same building as the 1849 Church. I agree about never finding property belonging to Matthew McCabe but as a brother of Arthur perhaps his shop was on Arthur's land just a bit north of where you have it.?

Marjorie--Would the old Salem have been on the corner of the now N. Main St. and Cemetery Rd. ? Before the DuPont Hwy. what we always called the back road to Frankford was the ONLY road,so it was probably a state road. I think I remember Mom telling me that there was a church there on the corner---either next to Bud and Diane Tingle's house or across Cemetery Rd. on that corner. I should have paid more attention.  NL

Thanks NinaLou, Yes, that is where I think the probably 3rd church (1849) church was--land that had been Zeno Long"s. I am with you about wishing I had paid more attention to what my elders said about what used to be.
