Ken, Location description..."to the 1st bounder of the land of Hezekiah Hudson, 78 acres" (this was Ebenezer Holloway's descendants' partition#3 9/20/1817 to David Murray.) I made a typo in earlier message: it was folio 445, not 444, p 40 of Keddies' abstracts of Sussex Deed Book AK.

Merrill first lived on his father's property in the Bunting "group" at Sandy Branch.  In 1833 he bought and apparently moved to a property of 21 acres called Golden Quarter diagonally across the road from his cousin Elijah on Lighthouse Road.  (I have fairly well identified thise properties by comparing descriptions with aerial photos of the topography, but not an exact drawing except for one of Elijah's farm).  His nearby neighbor was Eli Campbell, Jr who in 1849 sold Merrill the 25 acres of Hollands Adventure.  I don't know with absolute certainty but I assume that the two properties Golden Quarter and Hollands Adventure were adjacent or very close since Merrill and Eli appear next to each other in the census.  Merrill and then his minor children Charlotte and Peter who inherited the home place are shown in the census next to the son Milby who inherited the 25 acres.  Family tradition as well as the Beers Atlas indicate Milby just west of the intersection of Lighthouse Rd and Hudson Rd.  Beers also shows Elijah on the south side of Lighthouse Rd. somewhat farther to the west.

Joan, I rearranged (moved)your Photos to date order and added the description which should go in when the photos of the documents are added. My sense is that this property was not close to Sandy Branch although it mentions Cypress Swamp and Unity Grove. Unity Grove stretched farther northward in Sussex and Wm Holland was identified as from Indian River.
Ken, what do you think?

A good bit of the information in these abstracts seems to have no connection to Sandy Branch, but some of it does. Is there some way to
get more detailed facts about some of it? I am especially interested
in the reference to the "first bounder of Hezekiah Hudson" and the
rather odd mention of Buntens Mills. I can identify the bounder but
don't know which direction to go. Is the reference to Buntens Mills a
device for locating another property or what? Ken

Group: SelbyvilleHistoryAndGenealogy Message: 961 From: KENNETH BUNTING Date: 8/22/2011
Subject: Re: Hollonds/Hollands Chance

Joan, I have never been able to place it exactly.  The deed describes Friendship as next to Friends Assistance as well as Chance but there is no mention of a stream.  There is a problem regarding Chance.  In the warrant for Friends Assistance, Chance is said to be the property of John's father Jonathan.  In the deed for Friendship it is said to be next to a property called Chance which is the property of John.   This could be an error on the part of the surveyor.  Like you, I have seen a map of these properties and they are placed near the stream called Pig Pen Branch, but in light of other deeds this seems unlikely.  There just isn't room for it there.   Friendship adjoined Zadock Selby on the South and Zadock Selby lived in Worcester Co MD, so this seems to place the property on the MD/DE line.  It also places Friendship near other property that John owned and is mentioned in his will.  Also, John bought Friends Assistance from Tasloe Selby, who may have been related to Zadock.  My feeling is that all these properties lay to the SE of Sandy Branch near where Bunting Branch passes under Lighthouse Rd, but I have no verification for this.   Ken

The plat that I have shows the line of the property running in the middle of the creek. If I am to guess at the name, I think it is Deep Creek.

Ken

Joan, are you basing the guess that it is Deep Creek on what the word looks like or on what you know about a "Deep Creek"? The only one I find in Sussex is near Seaford.
I just found this list:

Corresponding on for MD is at

Does anyone else? I am intrigued that so many people got parts of the former 108 acres. I'm also beginning to wonder if there was more than one Hollands Venture/Adventure. A hundred acres could not have spread from Merrill Bunting's property near Lighthouse Rd to near the Hudson properties close to Jay Patch, nor to the other known properties of the Murrays, unless they were only a few feet wide. I wish there was more legal description available.

Thank you, Marjorie for the map of Wharton's Branch. It was great. It confirms for me what someone said- that Wharton's cemetery was located in the woods in back of an old lumber store on Rt. 113 (intersection of Rt. 20) in Dagsboro. The branch flows right near that area (not sure lumber place is there today).
Annie Toomey d. 1 July 1911 and is buried in Warton's Branch Cem. A friend looked this up in the Hudson record and says it is a cemetery that may have been the Johnson Cemetery, located on RD. 334 E113 under a trailer.?what does that mean? The property owner was Elisha Coffin. Anyone have any further info?

When I searched "Selbyville," I found the following radio program: "The History of Selbyville" on Jared Morris Radio Show (3/2009) with TuneIn Radio Pro. A little light on serious historical content, but you might enjoy listening to some chatting about the origin of the term "Selbyville," the Swamp Monster, etc. if you did not hear the original broadcast.

This morning I was surfing through some East Coast stations on Tunein Radio to hear local news about Hurricane Irene.

Hope you all weather this storm safely!

Bill, as near as I can determine now, Buckridge, one of Jesse Gray's
properties, lay on Polly Branch close to where the water treatment
plant is now. There were strips of land near it on the branch in the
vicinity of the Hudsons, whose property Dennis Security was said to be
at the head of St Martins River, and one of these may have been the Chance you mention. I haven't looked at this terrain as I have
others but looking at a topo map it seems possible there could have
been a sawmill there. What do you think? Ken

Note that in addition to Smallwoods Security which you have been trying to place on the map it mentions "Buntens Mills" (plural but could be a mistake). Also note in 'Files-Land tracts nr. Sandy Branch' that the 1805 deed to Arthur McCabe for 1/2 of Chance states that in 1804 Jonathan Burtin (probably Buntin) had rec'd the other half. This is probably the deed that I have been looking for that proved McCabe and Bunting held the Mill in partnership. Also, since you have studied Buntins Mill does either of these facts give you any more insight into the ownership of the 2 Mills at Selbyville that Beers Atlas shows by 1868?

Subject: Theory about the Property called Chance
I am considering the theory that at one time there was a property of
large acreage called Chance that became divided over time and the
owners of the divisions continued to use the name Chance for their smaller sections. This would help to explain why the deeds for three
properties for which records have been posted on SHAG seem crowded together. The following pertinent owners of a Chance are mentioned:
Jonathan Buntin, John Buntin, Arthur McCabe with Jonathan Buntin,
Miles Hudson, and Jesse Gray. I propose that the mill and property
sold to Jesse Gray from Miles Hudson then came into the hands of Thomas Hazard, who was probably a speculator/banker/merchant, and was finally sold to Arthur McCabe and Jonathan Buntin. A property called Chance adjoining this belonged to Jonathan Buntin and this property adjoined another property called Chance belonging to John Bunting and these two properties both adjoined John's property called Friends Assistance. I did not show all this on the map I recently posted but I have drawn a tentative plat on my worksheet which shows the mill and property owned in common by Jonathan and Arthur located at Buntings Creek at Lighthouse Rd as shown in the Beers map of 1868. Nina Lou,
Thank you so much for keeping the Calhouns in Sussex in mind!

Smiley Calhoun was born in abt 1809 in DE. There are many census entries and all have recorded him as "Smiley" or "Smilley."  Wondered if it might be a family surname, but haven't really seen any Smiley families in Sussex records I've checked so far.

I can place Smiley in Baltimore HD, Sussex Co. 1830-1850/60. His parents were reported to have both been born in DE.  By 1865 he had moved to Cumberland Co. NJ.

In the 1830 census, Smiley had become the 21 yr old head of household.

So, I would be interested in a tombstone for his father, a Calhoun male who died before 1830, possibly in Baltimore HD.

Also, Smiley may have married Mary Evans on 10 March 1830. Witnesses:  Robert Hudson, Samuel Aydlott, Zadock Aydlott, John Aydlott, and Joseph Aydlott.

Is there a tombstone for Mary Evans Calhoun who died sometime between 1830-40? (There was no woman of her probable age listed in Smiley's household in the 1840 census.) By 1845,  he was married to a woman named Hester, born 1823/24.

Another Calhoun tombstone:There was a child of Smiley's, Martha, who may have died sometime after 1850.  She would have been born in abt 1848.

    Thank you for checking!

Nina Lou, Freddie Stevens confirmed that you are right! I have added the other names to the photo (I was wrong on only 2 others, except for the ones I did not know at all.) I am going to add a 1983 picture of Heritage Sunday. Help me on the oldsters!
