I will check for pics.(Few and far between in our family)--don't even think we had a camera!! Granddaughter ,Sarah will "order" chicken and dumplings for her B-day on 2/20 ---but grands don't know about rolling them as I use the frozen Anne's,now--too lazy in old age !!   I remember one old bank next to Smith's Ladies Shop. Wasn't it used as a doctor's office at one point ??It had bars on the windows.Franklin and I lived 2 doors from the old fire house,on Duke St.  across the street from your Uncle Conn Scott( in Dr. Carey's old house). We moved there after we got married in 1962 and both  of our girls were born while we were there for 5 years.--- On Fri, 2/4/11, marjorie adams <marjea@wildblue.net> wrote:

Sounds like the Delmarva Chicken Festival took hold. In our family it was alwyas Mom-Mom's chicken 'n dumplins (ever so thin and slick). Before you go to Central Office see if you have other pics of Selbyville pre 1950. I finally found one of the firehouse but still don't have the old water tower or the Banks (did you know there were 2 before 1929?)

Nina Lou, If you have a scanner with your computer, you scan it to your Pictures. [Then on SHAG select Photos, add a Photo, browse, select Pictures, select the one you want to send, select open and it should end up on SHAG.] Are your grandkids close by? That's the generation who seems to have been born knowing how this new-fangled stuff works. It's been a challenge for me. My brain only holds so much of it so now I have forgotten how to program my thermostat!

Nina, Could you add the picture of the house belonging to William and Stella Hudson in Selbyville that you recently sent my cousin Judy Adams; it would be a treasure to preserve on SHAG now that the house is gone! Beth

Both the banks in Selbyvile started abt the same time. 1901 Selbyville National Bank by Wm R. McCabe and Baltimore Trust Co. by JG Townsend Jr.
I think below you meant to say Isaac McCabe (or Wm S). Were the store serving as Banks for their customers? Interesting way to get capital for more provisions.

Marjorie, I have a picture of the Selbyville Townsend Bank, but there are two pictures on the page where I found it, and after separating the two, the scan of just the bank removes the church-like steeple top, no matter how I work with the scanner. Shall I add the entire page with two pictures, or send the page to you to separate them on your scanner, or add picture of just the bank as is without the steeple? Also, was the bank building formerly a church; my son thinks it was. ---

Any clue where name Marshall came from for child of Lovey Long (<Benjamin, sister to Zeno)& John Bunting?
I'm actually working on Nataniel Long(<Joe<Benjamin)and a son[per some Ancestry records, Oliver <Marshall> Long m Lotty Hudson 1859 [DE Marriages]. The marriage bond was signed by Reuben Stevens, son of Wm Stevens & Ruth Long(<Joe<Benj).
I think Lotty was dau of Joshua Hudson & Letty Long(<Zeno<Benj)and may have been the 16 yr old "Letty"Hudson in Zeno's (Jene Long) 1850 hh.

There is an Isaac Marshall in 1800 in Balt. Hd. Then in 1810 and 1820 he is in Wor. There were other Marshalls who moved to MD from Accomack. Could Catherine, wife of Jonathan, have been a Marshall?

The mostly unsourced Ancestry records have Nathaniel Long b1805 (parents UNK) m 1827 Rachel LNU in Wilmington, New Castle DE. [??maybe 1830 Sussex??] Could she have been a Marshall since the son is Oliver Marshall Long? Contrary to the Ancestry records, that seem to be based on the work of Lloyd Matthews and show Nathaniel b 1829 of Joe and Mahala, I think Nathaniel was b abt 1806 [based on the 1810-1830 census for Joe]. Nathaniel is not in Joe's hh in 1840 or 1850, and I can not find him anywhere. Nathaniel was living in 1856 when Joe wrote his will which bequeathed him only 1 shilling which indicates Nathaniel was probably estranged from his father.

It's a conundrum.

Marjorie---This is a "long-shot" but Franklin's uncle was Jay Marshall Bunting son of John and Emma (Godfrey) Bunting of Frankford. He just died 2 years ago and was about 84 at the time.  Nina Lou

Beth, do you have a picture editor on your computer, like "Microsoft Picture it"? If you do, open the program, select My Documents which should give you Browse, select the picture you downloaded, then use Crop to take off the other item. I had to play with this to teach myself how to use it. If you have the program, try it.
BTW, what is the other picture of?  Also where did you find the picture? Great that you have found one.

Nina, now I remember the building with the bars on the windows! I have vivid memories of going there to Dr. Hume's office in 2 emergencies when very young--a messed up nose from falling while running in the house and a severely cut hand from tossing bricks back and forth with my best friend, Lanta Taylor. Sometimes child's play isn't!

There was a Catherine Marshall, mentioned in the will of Aaron Tilghman Worcester will (SOW EB1:126) 13 MAY 1775 proved 8 JUN 1779, but I think she married John Bell. The name Marshall is connected to the area; for example, we have an Isaac Marshall Hudson and other families probably have the same. Caty could be a nee Marshall, but I have not found that connection. I did read that Marshall's name was sometimes spelled "Martial" so there may be a classical reference like "Zeno" to add to the confusion.

Another piece to go in my puzzle bag. In the will of Lovie's fa Benjamin Long her son is named Martial but spelling in wills and other documents in those days was mostly from the clerk who wrote them. It looks like I must have the genes of one of those clerks as I spelled Nathaniel as Natanel in my original message.

A much more likely reason for the spelling; the clerk may have been more educated in the classics and automatically used the Latin writer's name. At least, former Latin teachers hope so. Marjorie, your idea about Marshall as Caty's maiden name is very logical; I hope it is true. Wouldn't it be helpful to find the Bunting wives maiden names!

The four sons of Jonathan and Caty Buntin/Bunton/Bunting were Marshall, Mitchell, Milby and Jackson.  All of these suggest surname possibilities in the Sussex and Worcester Co area.  What makes it even more difficult is that these names also occur in Accomack Co where we Buntings originated.  I have attempted to correspond with people of these names who have a genealogical interest in VA to determine if anyone has a Catherine/Caty in their background but so far have received no useful replies.
The only one of the four sons who could read and write was Marshall and he signed his will as Marshall Buntin.

If I keep working at it I may get everything right and then just put my tail between my legs and sneak away.
It was John who was the only literate one. Marshall made his mark on a petition to appoint guardian dated March 7, 1814. His age is given as 14 years and 8 months. Does this match the age cited in Benjamin Long's LWT? The copy I have of the petition probably won't copy it is so barely legible and shows no file number so I can't try to submit it.
His name is spelled Marshall in the petition and also in his father's LWT. And John was literate so I suppose he preferred the spelling Marshall for his son.
But even that may not be definitive. The handwriting of the text in John's LWT is different from his signature, so it was probably dictated to a notary.
I believe it was President Andrew Jackson who remarked that it takes a mighty small mind to know only way to spell a word.

the dates fit. Based on the Mar 7 1814, I calculate Marshall was b July 1799. Benjamin wrote his will Nov 17 1799;Marshall was his first grandchild and I presume Lovey had died bet July and Nov 1799. Was the petition to Orphans' Court?
I'll have to remember the Andrew Jackson quote. It will serve as a good excuse for my bad spelling and even worse typing.

The best way to post a document is to put it into pdf format.  If you need help with that, send the document to me and I'll convert it and send it back to you in pdf and then you can upload it.
The reason for using pdf is that pdf "locks" the document's format so that everyone will view it identically.  If the document is not converted to pdf, then it will likely be displayed to various persons with different tab settings, fonts, line endings, spacing, indents etc.

Be aware that some newer word processor software has the capability to directly save a document in pdf format.  Also, there are some free software applications that enable you to convert to pdf.  CutePDF is a good one for Windows computer users.

Thanks Bill. Since I didn't have any file conversion software, I just now downloaded "doPDF"--it was well explained on the home site and seemed simple enough for me. Tried it on one file and it worked easily. It also uses 1/5 of the file space here on SHAG than the former Word doc did. I think this would be a good technique to use for documents that include both pictures and text. As jpg photo formats those take up too much of out allotted space as a File and often are hard to read in a Photo album.
But, one thing I still like better about the "cut & paste" technique for files on this site is that users can look at the resulting file directly, without having to download it to their computer.

This is a conjecture -- the parents of Nathaniel Hudson might be Isaiah Hudson and Lovey Long. At age 20, he is found working for a neighboring family to these Hudsons, who have other children listed in the 1850 census from age 31 on down.

Long at once became enraged and alleges that Hudson started to get his gun when he fired two shots first, hitting Hudson both times in the back. Hudson was still able to reach his gun and fired in return, the load going wide, but a few of the shot struck Long in the head and neck. I don't think it's the same John Hudson.  For one thing, as you say,  the John Hudson who married Charlotte was probably born about 1810.  Also I don't know where John Hudson's personal property was located but the tract he and Charlotte brought suit about was near Jonathan's homeplace in Sandy Branch.  It was 25 acres and had formerly belonged to Charlotte's father Mitchell.  It had been 50 acres but Mitchell's widow Dolly (Murray) apparently sold or gave half of it to Jackson Buntin, with whom she and her minor children apparently lived for several years.   All four of Jonathan's sons lived next to or around him and Jonathan lived very close to Arthur McCabe.  I have tentatively placed the Bunting home places in the Polly Branch Road area and some of the Hudsons north of them.

I wonder if the property Buckridge may not have been in the Willards vicinity. The road from Snow Hill north through Sandy Branch is always referred to as a state road in other documents, whereas Buckridge is said to be on a county road from Snow Hill, but in Sussex. This makes me suspect that the road could be what is now called Powellville Road from Snow Hill to Willards. Although Powellville Road nowadays ends at Willards, aerial maps show local field roads traversing northward from it into Sussex Co. Powellville Road parallels the Pocomoke River its entire length and Pocomoke River was a center of lumbering and sawmills in that era.

Possible but the dates make it questionable. What does the P. stand for? In 1850 he is in the hh of Joshua P. Long, son of Joe Long. Birth Date: In 1880 his name is Nathaniel P. Hudson.
His birth is consistent in all the censuses: 1830, with 1900 giving May 1830 BUT Isaiah has Matilda b 31 May 1830 according to her marker in the Hudson & Tatnall list for Hudson#594.
He is not on find-a-grave in Sussex .

    > Shoots Father-in-law
    > Denied the privilege of seeing his wife and child, from whom he has been separated, Lee Long shot his father-in-law yesterday afternoon at Selbyville, Del., and was shot in the head by Hudson in his own defense. Hudson was rushed to the Jefferson Hospital, in Philadelphia, in the hope of saving his life while Long was conducted to Georgetown and placed in county jail.
    > Long has been separated from his wife for several months and has made a number of attempts to see her at the home of her father, Constable Elisha Hudson. yesterday afternoon he was walking by the Hudson home, when his two-year-old boy came out and spoke to him. The father picked the child up, when Hudson appeared and ordered him to leave. Long at once became enraged and alleges that Hudson started to get his gun when he fired two shots first, hitting Hudson both times in the back. Hudson was still able to reach his gun and fired in return, the load going wide, but a few of the shot struck Long in the head and neck. There has been ill-feeling between the two men for some time, as Long was about to bring a suit against his wife for a divorce on alleged misconduct.

Beth, I may have a few pictures.. an old postcard comes to mind that I could scan when I find it. I just uploaded some copies of McCabe information that is available at the Dover Archives. Most of it relates to John McCabe of Selbyville (born 13th May 1727), and includes information from the McCabe family bible. My mother's maiden name is McCabe, and as you may know, my parents weren't the first Williams-McCabe union amongst the descendents of the Selbyville McCabes, so it is quite possible that a few of my Williams ancestors were from Selbyville.

Brad, We are VERY glad to have your McCabe Documents. Would you edit the tittles and descriptions, putting in the Archives source. Please give as specific a citation as you have. I just rearranged the order of your photos but if I edit the description Yahoo replaces your name with mine and I don't like that to happen.
Also please define the McCabe family Bible as it is described on the document page (but I noticed on p1 it says Rehoboth MD and on p1 Rehoboth DE--do you know which is correct? if not, just put on the site what the page says.)I know of at least 1 other early McCabe Bible that at one time was in the possession of Paul B. McCabe and his son Paul Jr.
Also which McCabe is your mother? I descend from Arthur of John. and remember you promised to add pictures of Dorothy and Paul Pepper at the light house (they lived in Selbyville).

Marjorie, I will try to make some time this evening to add better descriptions. The MD for Rehoboth was, I believe, a mistake. I'm thinking that this was the same bible that came into Paul B. McCabe's possession, but I will have to try to confirm that.

My mother is Frances McCabe, also descended from Arthur of John. :-)

Thank you for the reminder about the picture of Dorothy and Paul Pepper. I will look for that also.

Marjorie, I found and uploaded the picture of Dorothy and Paul in front of Fenwick lighthouse. I created a WILLIAMS folder to put it in, since Dorothy's maiden name was WILLIAMS and we are both descended from Elzey WILLIAMS (born about 1760).

The 1718 date on the 'Rehoboth Maryland' document would refer to a time when much of Sussex County was within Maryland jurisdiction. Could this possibly be the source of the confusion?

Marjorie, I will try to make some time this evening to add better descriptions. The MD for Rehoboth was, I believe, a mistake. I'm thinking that this was the same bible that came into Paul B. McCabe's possession, but I will have to try to confirm that.

My mother is Frances McCabe, also descended from Arthur of John. :-)

Thank you for the reminder about the picture of Dorothy and Paul Pepper. I will look for that also.

I don't think so Jason. The document from the Archives states that in 1923 the Bible was in the possession of John D. McCabe of Rehoboth MD. There was also a Rehoboth MD but John David (no issue)lived in Rehoboth DE, b 1889, son of Joshua W <John D <Garrison <Arthur [Descendants of John McCabe by Vernon McCabe.]Like Brad, I think the MD was a mistake.
Now John McCabe (b 1718/1727) did settle at Sandy Branch when it was MD.
Brad, The Bible that was in the possession of Paul B. McCabe (d 1992) has John's birth 13 May 1727. I have not been able to locate this Bible (Paul B. Jr. d in 2010 and his widow did not know of it.) I have a letter from Paul Sr. quoting the information.

Ok, so there were two bibles. I found the old postcard I have, and it is of E. B. McCabe's General Store in Fenwick Island, so it may not be appropriate for upload here.

Since we have this cemetery included on the site, I have added a link to the cemetery entry on FindAGrave.com About two years ago, I added most of the entries for this cemetery on Find A Grave because I have a copy of all burials up to a certain year. This list was provided to me by the caretaker of the cemetery at that time. For some of the burials in the official list, there either was no original marker or headstone, or they were destroyed by vandals in the 1970's and 1980's. The markers of a few of my WILLIAMS ancestors were lost to vandalism there over the years. The pictures on Find A Grave are mostly ones I took some years ago that I added with the entries.

Marjorie, I have a network storage device that is always on and has over 500GB's of space free. I could set up a SHAG folder there to get around email space limitations. Any member could then log in via website (www.mystora.com) with ID/password and upload large files or large numbers of files/photos to the folder. You, or any member could then download them to your computer for adding them on SHAG.

There are free web services (e.g., http://www.yousendit.com) that can be used to transfer large files to someone that intends to upload them to SHAG.  The main problem is how to get a large number of 33mm slides into jpg files.   Best way to do it would be with a slide scanner.  They cost about $70.

Brad, It's the upload to SHAG that I have to be careful about--limited number of mbs for upload in a 30 day period.  I have plenty of receiving and storeage space in my email.
